Why Students Struggle with IGCSE Additional Mathematics

Most students who find Add Maths difficult are not weak at maths. They are missing one or two specific algebra foundations, and Additional Mathematics exposes those gaps faster than any other subject.

Why do students struggle with IGCSE Additional Mathematics?

Students struggle with IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) for five main reasons: weak algebraic foundations from earlier years, memorising steps instead of understanding methods, poor working structure in exam answers, not recognising when a foundation gap is the root cause, and starting remediation too late. The most common single cause is algebra — specifically factorising, sign control, and function notation.

After working through diagnostic results with IGCSE Add Maths students since 2018, the same five root causes appear repeatedly, regardless of school or background.

  1. Weak algebraic foundations from earlier years. Add Maths (0606) assumes fluent algebra from the first topic. Students who managed IGCSE Maths (0580) by memorising steps find that the same approach fails when questions change shape. Factorising, sign control in multi-step working, and function notation are the three most common gaps.
  2. Memorising steps instead of understanding why they work. A student who learned to expand brackets by copying a method can handle familiar questions. Once Add Maths rephrases the same concept, the method fails because there is no understanding underneath to adapt from.
  3. Poor working structure in exam answers. Add Maths marks are awarded for method steps, not just the final answer. Students who never learned to lay out working clearly lose marks systematically, even when their thinking is correct.
  4. Not diagnosing the actual root cause. A common response to struggling is to do more past-paper questions. This helps when the method is correct but needs speed. It does not help when the method is wrong. More practice on a shaky foundation reinforces the same errors.
  5. Starting too late. Foundation gaps that accumulate across Years 7 to 9 are harder to close in the final months before the IGCSE exam. Students who identify and address their gaps in Year 9 or early Year 10 have enough time to rebuild properly before exam pressure intensifies.

Why Add Maths builds differently from core Maths

IGCSE Additional Mathematics (Cambridge 0606) introduces functions, indices laws, quadratics, binomial expansion, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, and calculus in a single course. Each topic builds on algebraic fluency as a prerequisite. A student who enters with genuine algebraic understanding will find the new material learnable. A student who enters with memorised procedures will find that each new topic adds a new failure point on top of the old ones.

Why more practice does not always help

A common response to struggling is to do more past-paper questions. This works when the student has the right method and needs to build speed. It does not work when the method itself is wrong or missing. Repeating the same working on more questions reinforces the same errors. The more productive path is to identify the specific gap first, rebuild the foundation properly, and then increase practice volume once the method is solid.

  • Indices and logarithm laws. These appear across multiple chapters and in exam questions in combinations that students do not recognise if the underlying laws are not fully internalised.
  • Working structure and method clarity. Students who never received feedback on their working layout often do not know their presentation is costing marks until they receive an exam paper back.

The approach that builds real progress

Students who make consistent improvement in Add Maths typically go through the same sequence: a diagnostic reveals the specific gaps, the gaps are rebuilt with clear method explanation (not more drilling), and the student is then given exam-style questions that require the method to transfer. The transfer stage is where many approaches stop too early. Getting a question right on a familiar example is not the same as being able to apply the same reasoning when the question is phrased differently.
