Difference between IGCSE Maths and Add Maths

IGCSE Maths and Additional Mathematics are two different Cambridge subjects, not two versions of the same exam. They are sat separately and they test different things.

Short answer

IGCSE Maths is the broad core. Add Maths is the deeper, more algebraic extension.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is the core Maths qualification almost every IGCSE student takes. It covers number, algebra, geometry, statistics, probability, and problem solving across a wide range of contexts. Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 is a separate, optional subject taken in addition to 0580. It goes deeper into functions, algebra, trigonometry, calculus readiness, and symbolic reasoning, and it is treated as a bridge towards A-Level or IB Maths.

They are not the same exam, not the same paper structure, and not the same level. A student who scores well in IGCSE Maths is not automatically prepared for Add Maths, because Add Maths assumes faster, more confident algebra.

What IGCSE Maths tests

Cambridge 0580 in plain language

0580 rewards a student who can handle a wide range of topics, show clear working, and read exam questions carefully. The challenge is usually breadth and exam method, not abstract difficulty.

  • Number, fractions, percentages, ratio.
  • Algebra: equations, graphs, sequences, simple manipulation.
  • Geometry, mensuration, trigonometry in right-angled and basic non-right triangles.
  • Statistics, probability, data interpretation.
What Add Maths tests

Cambridge 0606 in plain language

0606 rewards a student who is comfortable with symbols. Each chapter expects fluent algebra, and several chapters expect the student to combine ideas from earlier ones without prompting.

  • Functions, transformations, and inverses.
  • Quadratics, polynomials, surds, indices, logarithms.
  • Trigonometric identities, equations, and graphs.
  • Differentiation, integration, and their applications.
Choosing

Who should take Add Maths in addition to IGCSE Maths?

Good fit

Strong algebra, willing to practise outside school, planning A-Level or IB Maths, science, or engineering at the next stage.

Possibly fit

Solid IGCSE Maths but algebra still slow. Worth a readiness check before committing.

Not a good fit

Already struggling in IGCSE Maths, weak algebra, or limited time to practise. Add Maths can make a fragile situation worse.
