Short answer

0580 is the core Cambridge Maths syllabus, and it has its own method demands

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) is the standard Cambridge Maths subject almost every Malaysian IGCSE student sits, usually across Year 9 to Year 11. It is not the same subject as Additional Mathematics (0606). MathPert runs a live online 0580 class in Malaysia, capped at 8 students and led by Teacher Au, focused on the working steps and exam layout that 0580 marking actually rewards.

The syllabus

What Cambridge 0580 covers

Cambridge 0580 is examined at two tiers, Core and Extended, and covers six broad content areas:

  • Number. Fractions, percentages, ratio, standard form, and number properties.
  • Algebra and graphs. Equations, inequalities, sequences, and graph sketching.
  • Coordinate geometry. Straight lines, gradients, and midpoints.
  • Geometry and mensuration. Angle properties, similarity, area, volume, and constructions.
  • Trigonometry. Right-angled and non-right-angled triangle trigonometry, bearings.
  • Probability and statistics. Data handling, averages, and probability of combined events.

The exact topic list, tier boundaries, and weightings are set by Cambridge Assessment International Education. Check the current 0580 syllabus document for the definitive version.

0580 vs 0606

Two different Cambridge subjects

IGCSE Maths 0580 is the core subject nearly every student sits. Additional Mathematics 0606 is a separate, optional subject that some students add on top, usually in Year 10 or 11, if they are strong in 0580 and considering A-Level Mathematics. A student can sit 0580 alone, or 0580 and 0606 together. See the full comparison of IGCSE Maths and Add Maths.

Core vs Extended

Why the tier choice matters

The Core tier covers a narrower grade range; the Extended tier covers the full grade range including the top grades. Most students aiming for competitive post-16 pathways sit Extended. The tier decision is usually made by the school, but it changes what a tutor should be reinforcing, so it is worth confirming before starting tuition.

How MathPert teaches 0580

Method first, not just more questions

A common pattern with 0580: a student can recall formulas but loses marks on multi-step questions because the working is not structured the way Cambridge marking expects. Teacher Au's approach is to see each student's actual working live during the Zoom class, catch the specific point where the method breaks, and correct it there, rather than only marking the final answer right or wrong.

The class is live, capped at 8 students, and runs on the Malaysian academic calendar. For more on the approach, see the teaching method page.
