I teach Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) and Additional Mathematics (0606) online for students in Year 7 to Year 11 across Malaysia, through my tuition brand MathPert Education.

My teaching approach is method-first. When a student struggles with IGCSE Add Maths, the problem is usually not effort — it is that they learned how to follow a worked example but not why each step is taken. This means they can copy a solution but freeze on a question they have not seen before. My goal in every lesson is to close that gap: to teach the reasoning, not just the procedure, so students can handle unfamiliar exam questions with confidence.

Group classes are capped at 8 students. I call on students to answer and walk through their working, so every class is interactive. Students cannot coast through by watching — they are expected to engage, which is where real learning happens.

I focus on the areas that lose Malaysian IGCSE students the most marks: algebraic structure, working layout, calculus method, trigonometry identities, and the foundational gaps that cause recurring careless mistakes. The curriculum follows the full Cambridge IGCSE syllabus and aligns with the Malaysian school year (January to December).

Is Add Maths harder than IGCSE Maths, and does my child need it?

IGCSE Additional Mathematics goes significantly beyond the core Maths syllabus. It introduces calculus, trigonometric identities, and harder algebraic reasoning that the core exam does not test. Whether a student needs it depends on their target post-secondary pathway: students aiming for A-Level science, technology, or engineering subjects almost always need Add Maths as a foundation. It is worth checking with your child's school whether Add Maths is a requirement or a recommendation for their intended A-Level combination.

My child is in Year 7. Is it too early to start IGCSE Maths tuition?

Year 7 is not too early, particularly if there are foundation gaps in algebra or number. Many of the errors students make in Year 10 and Year 11 IGCSE exams trace back to weak algebraic habits formed in Year 7 and 8. Starting earlier means more time to build strong method before exam pressure arrives. MathPert teaches Year 7 students in both group and one-to-one formats.

How is a small group class different from a private lesson?

In a group class capped at 8, Teacher Au can still call on individual students and respond to their specific errors — it functions more like a seminar than a lecture. The advantage over one-to-one is that students hear how others approach problems, which often surfaces assumptions they did not know they had. One-to-one is better when a student needs a completely different pace, has an urgent exam very close, or has specific gaps that do not align with the group's current topic.
